狮子原产于亚洲西部和非洲，汉代作为贡品传入中国。当时狮子类稀有动物都养在帝王宫苑内，平常百姓难以看到。狮子的传入动摇了传说中虎的威信，逐渐被人们视为辟邪瑞兽。加之佛教对狮子大为推崇，因此狮子也随着佛教扎根于民间。并被视作"百兽之王"，压邪安吉的象征。
