Sculpture can be divided into traditional sculpture and modern sculpture. Traditional sculpture is a visual, touchable and static three-dimensional art form shaped by traditional materials; modern sculpture is made of new materials, such as anti-traditional four-dimensional, five-dimensional sculpture, sound-light sculpture, soft sculpture, dynamic sculpture, etc.
According to the traditional material, according to the environment and function, it can be divided into city sculpture, garden sculpture, indoor sculpture, outdoor sculpture, desk sculpture, shelf sculpture and so on.
Because there are quite a variety of materials for sculpture, such as clay, stone, wood, metal, gypsum, resin, ivory and so on. Several categories have been developed:
Wood sculpture: Wood sculpture has a long history. Most of its early themes were centered on religion. Besides religious idols, it was also used for decoration of altars and religious places. In a country where wooden architecture is flourishing, woodcarving develops with architecture. Modern woodcarving has quite diversified features, and artists like to use abstract forms to express. In addition, woodcarving is also an important contributor to the invention of printing. See woodcarving printmaking for details.
Stone carving: The development area of stone carving is closely related to where the stone suitable for carving is produced. Stone carving has a long history in developed areas. In the past, stone carvings were often used as garden ornaments, doorway signs, or mausoleum architectural decorations. Based on the thickness of stones (not easy to be stolen), the details of the carvings were not easily destroyed by the wind and rain. Most of the stone carvings were mainly in the outdoor environment. The common stone carving material is marble.
